A record number of six women’s rugby team players from Worthing College have been called up to represent the England U18s.

These players form part of a 54-woman squad selected for a three-day training camp at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre, which will take place next month.

The six players chosen include Lily Girdler, Solana Shaw de Leon, Alice Redfern, Imogen Wheeler, Evie Collingbourne and Dita Shaw.

Alice Redfern, one of the players called up, said: “I feel a sense pride to be able to represent Worthing College…and all of my teammates that have pushed me to come this far, and show them how much they’ve helped me.

“I’m looking forward to being able to play with such a high calibre of players, and hopefully they will push me to be better and I will learn from everyone, especially from people across England as we’re all taught Rugby slightly differently.”

All the women selected have the potential to represent England at the U18 Women’s Six Nations next year and be involved in further preparations at squad camps later in the year.

Lily Girdler added:
“When I found out, it was a bit crazy. It’s a big confidence boost, it’s an exciting opportunity, and such a good experience as well.

“When I got the news, I was in my room, and obviously the e-mail came out and I quickly checked my emails, and I got it, and it didn’t feel real. I shouted downstairs to my mum and dad.

“It was just a great feeling as well to be around your family as well, because they do everything for you, all the hard work they do for like me, it’s kind of paying off.”

The staff at Worthing College are extremely excited to follow the players’ journey as they thrive in the sport they are so passionate about.

Mark Rugman, Head of Sport and Science at Worthing College and Head Coach of Worthing College’s rugby team, said:

“I’m super proud, in the past, we’ve had three girls who have made it to the England camp, so to have six now is a fantastic achievement for the college. I think they’re great ambassadors and role models for the team, but also Worthing moving forward.”

Helena Thomas, Principal at Worthing College, added:
“I am incredibly proud of the hard work, dedication, and talent these young women have shown, both on and off the field.

“Their selection to represent England at the U18 level is a testament to their commitment and the support they’ve received from their coaches, teammates, and the entire Worthing College community. We look forward to watching them continue to shine and inspire others.”
