From Worthing College Student to Aspiring Solicitor: Matt Celebrates Key Milestone
A former Worthing College student is one step closer to fulfilling his ambition of becoming a solicitor after successfully passing the first stage of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE).
Former Worthing College alumni Matt Gent, who studied BTEC Law, BTEC Psychology and Criminology, recently passed the exam after completing a 10-week preparation course at the University of Chichester.
His achievement marks another exciting chapter in a journey that began at Worthing College and has since led him to a role within the commercial legal team at West Sussex County Council, which sets him on his way to becoming a qualified solicitor.
He completed his studies in the summer of 2021 and described how his lecturer at the time ” was very inspirational and is one of the reasons I pursued my legal research/career further”. Looking back on his time at the college, he added:
“I enjoyed my time at Worthing College. I was not someone who enjoyed education at School and used to struggle academically. However, being able to study subjects I was interested in motivated me to become a better student and take my academic abilities further.”
Reflecting on how his time at the college helped him get to where he is today, he added:
“Studying BTEC Law at Worthing College was one of the best choices I made. Learning the law in a different approach to standard A Level law helped me by providing an alternative learning approach which suited me better than sitting exams.
“BTEC Law taught me how to apply the law to various real-life scenarios through coursework. I was able to use these skills in my degree, obtaining a first-class law degree and other academic awards. I still use this skill to date in my current role applying the law to clients’ issues.”
When asked if he would recommend Worthing College, he said:
“Yes… the level of knowledge and skills I learnt through the three courses I took was very impactful and has helped me pursue my career further.”
