COURSE OVERVIEW
Do you have the passion to inspire the next generation of sports performers? Or do you want to ensure that we enhance healthy and active lifestyles across our population? If the answer is yes, then our Sport Studies course is the one for you! At the College we continue to provide an outstanding experience for our students and studying on the Sport Studies course is no different. Our lecturers have a wide range of both educational and industry led experience to support our students in realising their progression route goals across a range of career choices, such as teaching, coaching, personal training for example. The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with employers, professional bodies, academics and Universities to ensure that if it supports progression to positive progression routes. The qualification gives students the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the sport, health and active lifestyle sector to prepare them for future careers. In the first year (Foundation Diploma) students will study the following units; o Unit 1 -; Anatomy & Physiology (externally assessed unit) o Unit 2 -; Fitness Training & Programming for Health, Sport & Well-being (externally assessed unit) o Unit 3 -; Professional Development in the Sports Industry o Unit 4 -; Sports Leadership o Unit 5 -; Application of Fitness Testing o Unit 7 -; Practical Sport o Unit 10 -; Organising Sports Events From the knowledge gained in the first year, students will study the following in year two (Extended Diploma); o Unit 6 -; Sports Psychology o Unit 8 -; Coaching for Performance o Unit 9 -; Research Methods o Unit 17 -; Sports Injury Management o Unit 19 -; Development & Provision of Sport & Physical Activity (externally assessed unit) o Unit 22 -; Investigating Business in Sport & the Active Leisure Industry (externally assessed unit) So, if you are looking for a career in sport or just wanting to develop your knowledge within this amazing subject area, this course is for you!
FURTHER INFORMATION
You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9-4, including English Language or Maths.
GCSE PE or other vocational Sport qualifications is very useful, but not compulsory. You will need to enjoy participating in a range of practical activities as this will be embedded as part of the learning process.
Sport continues to be a fast growing industry with many different aspects. This course provides a wide range of study with many options for progression and development. This course is supported by Universities with students going on to study at places like Loughborough, Leeds, Bath and more locally to the Universities of Chichester, Brighton, Southampton Solent & Bournemouth. Examples of higher education courses that have been studied by past students include; o BA (Hons) Sport Studies o BA (Hons) Physical Education o BA (Hons) Sport Journalism o BA (Hons) Sport & Business Management o BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Psychology o BSc (Hons) Sport & Coaching Sciences o BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Science o BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy Students could also progress within Worthing College to a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Health, Sport & Exercise Science as well as Apprenticeships in Personal Training. From these progression routes learners can access a range of career paths ranging from teaching, coaching, sports development, personal training, sports therapy, sports management and many more.
As this course has practical elements, both in and out of the classroom, students are required to purchase a kit package. If a student is selected for any of the Academy of Sport performance programmes they only need to purchase their specific bundle. If a student is not in an Academy of Sport performance programme they will need to purchase the Sport & PE Bundle. Please note that you only need to purchase ONE of these bundles. At the College we feel this is vital to ensure that all students are fully resourced to be a real success in all aspects of the course.
At the College we uphold the ethos of the “academic athlete” and require students to adhere to the Worthing College Sport Standards of; o Be on time, o Bring the correct kit/equipment, o Work hard, o Health body & health mind. The Foundation/Extended Diploma in Sport is a full 3 A-Level equivalent programme students are not required to study another course with it. Students wishing to study another course need to consider the Sport & Exercise Science Extended Certificate (2 A-Level equivalent).
