Sport BTEC Level 2 First Certificate

COURSE OVERVIEW

Do you want to develop your overall sporting knowledge? Do you want a stepping stone to develop confidence and provide a path towards a career in sport? If the answer is yes, then our Sport Level 2 course is the one for you! At the College we continue to provide an outstanding experience for our students and studying on the Level 2 Sport course is no different. Our lecturers have a wide range of both educational and industry led experience to support our students in realising their progression route goals across a range of career choices, such as teaching, coaching & personal training for example. The qualification gives students the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the sport, health and active lifestyle sector to prepare them for Level 3 study, as well as any future careers within the sector and beyond. The Level 2 Sport course is made up of two Core Units: o Unit 1: Fitness for Sport and Exercise: (Externally assessed unit) This unit looks at components of fitness, exploring training methods and investigation of fitness testing to gain understanding of fitness levels. It is assessed with a 1 hour online exam with a mixture of multiple choice, drop down and short/medium answer questions. o Unit 2: Practical Sports Performance: This unit looks at the rules, regulations and scoring systems of different sports, practically demonstrate skills, techniques and tactics in selected sports and reviewing of sports performance. One Mandatory Unit: o Unit 7: Anatomy and Physiology for Sports Performance: (Externally assessed unit) This unit will look at the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system and the structure and function of the cardiorespiratory system. It is assessed with a 1 hour online exam with a mixture of multiple choice, drop down and short/medium answer questions. Five Optional Specialist Units: o Unit 3: The Mind and Sports Performance: This unit will look at one of the most interesting subjects in the field of sport; sports psychology. You will learn how the mind is used explain how performance can be both positive and negative. This unit will involve elements of practical examples as well as class-based work. o Unit 5: Training for Personal Fitness: This until will look at designing a personal fitness programme, exercise adherence factors and strategies, implementation of a training programme and reviewing a personal training programme. o Unit 6: Leading Sports Activities: This unit will look at the attributes associated with successful sports leadership, planning and leading sports activities and reviewing personal planning and leading of sports activities. o Unit 9: Lifestyle and Well-being: This unit will look at recommended guidelines for physical activity, what makes a healthy diet, diet planning, health risks associated with smoking and excessive alcohol consumption and the impact of drugs on health and sports performance. o Unit 11: Running a Sports Event: This unit will look at planning, organising and running a sports event and reviewing personal contribution to running a sport event. Students on this course also participate in work experience, which will involve enhancing the local community in terms of delivery of PE & Sport to young children. FURTHER INFORMATION

The entry requirements for this course are a minimum of four GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English. Another written subject may be considered. GCSE maths would be preferred.

GCSE PE or other vocational Sport qualifications is very useful, but not compulsory. You will need to enjoy participating in a range of practical activities as this will be embedded as part of the learning process. Please note that as part of your study programme you may need to retake GCSE English and/or Maths, which as a department we will fully support to make sure that you get these important qualifications.
