COURSE OVERVIEW

At the College we continue to provide an outstanding experience for our students and studying on the Sport & Exercise Science course is no different. Our lecturers have a wide range of both educational and industry led experience to support our students in realising their progression route goals across a range of career choices, such as sports therapy, sports nutrition, performance analysis and strength & conditioning. The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with employers, professional bodies, academics and Universities to ensure that if it supports progression to positive progression routes. The qualification gives students the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the sport and exercise science sector to prepare them for future careers. In the first year (Foundation Diploma) students will study the following units; Unit 2: Functional Anatomy (externally assessed unit) Unit 3: Applied Sport & Exercise Psychology (externally assessed unit) Unit 5: Applied Research Methods in Sport & Exercise Science Unit 6: Coaching for Performance & Fitness Unit 8: Specialised Fitness Training Unit 9: Research Project in Sport & Exercise Science From the knowledge gained in the first year, students will study the following in year two (Extended Diploma); Unit 1: Sport & Exercise Physiology (externally assessed unit) Unit 4: Field & Lab Based Testing Training Unit 10: Physical Activity for Individual & Group Based Exercise Unit 11: Sports Massage Unit 13: Nutrition for Sport & Exercise Performance (externally assessed unit) Unit 14: Technology in Sport & Exercise Science Unit 15: Sports Injury & Assessment So, if you are looking for a career in sport and exercise science or just wanting to develop your knowledge within this amazing subject area, this course is for you!

FURTHER INFORMATION

You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at 9-4, including a grade 4 in Science and a grade 4 English Language.

GCSE PE or other vocational Sport and/or Sport and Exercise Science qualifications are very useful, but not compulsory. You will need to have a keen interest in the subject and its facets, particularly human performance. Examples of this include how body systems, the brain, health, fitness & nutrition may all influence performance. An interest and knowledge of a range of sports is desirable as well as current affairs in sport, which will allow students to understand the theory from their own knowledge and experiences.
