Principles of Applied Science BTEC Level 2 First Award

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course is made up of two Level 2 Awards; you will need to apply for Applications of Science BTEC Level 2 First Award too. Each Award is equivalent to one GCSE and is made up of four Mandatory units. These mandatory units cover aspects of biology, chemistry and physics, and focus on how our knowledge of these sciences is used in everyday life. As well as providing basic information, it looks at how science is used in everyday situations.

The four units in Principles of Applied Science cover core concepts to develop your knowledge of biology, chemistry and physics topics.

The four units in the Application of Applied Science look at how scientific knowledge is applied and is more practical in nature.

The course involves a lot of research, completing tasks based on a variety of scientific ideas and exams. Much of the work is covered during practical investigations and you will learn about laboratory safety and good practice. This is a very practical course; the main aim is for you to develop your techniques and understanding of the range of skills needed by a science technician in the workplace. This means that much of the learning will be through practical projects, independent research, and presentations. You will also have plenty of practice to prepare for exams.

As a part of this course all learners will participate in a personal development and work-related experience (Concordia). Backed by the National Citizen Service, this experience helps set students apart when applying for jobs and gives them a compelling edge in future applications and interviews, opening doors to exciting career opportunities. The experience focusses on eight core skills: listening, speaking, problem solving, creativity, aiming high, staying positive, leadership and teamwork. This experience gives students on this course a chance to be active, learn new skills and build new friendships which will support academic and personal growth.

*Don’t forget to apply for Applications of Science BTEC First Award too!*
