This course builds understanding of how English works and has evolved. You will analyse real-world spoken and written texts, develop key language skills, and explore topics such as variation, child language, and identity. It supports progression to university and careers in media, education, and communication.

You will learn to analyse language data clearly and accurately, using the appropriate terminology and linguistic frameworks. You will need to be able to write effectively for different audiences and purposes. You comment on and analyse your own writing.

English Language combines well with many A Levels, including Media, Psychology, History, sciences, and maths. It supports progression to university and is valued for many degree courses. It is useful for careers in teaching, journalism, media, and speech therapy, or further study in English.
Assessment is by three exams at the end of two years (2h15, 1h15, 1h45) covering language variation, child language, and research. Coursework (NEA) totals 3000 words. Students may also take an AS exam at the end of year one to track progress.
