Worthing College celebrates its Stars of 2024

12 July 2024

Worthing College marked a host of exceptional achievements at their annual Star Awards ceremony.

Held in collaboration with Northbrook College, around 20 students and members of staff scooped awards at the ‘Stars of 2024’ evening on Thursday (27 June).

It was a night of celebration, where the college paid tribute to their hard work, determination and accomplishments over the past year.

Performances from the Northbrook College’s students brought the ceremony to life, with beautiful renditions of ‘Empire State of Mind’ and ‘I Just Might’ (from the musical ‘9 to 5’).

It culminated in the announcement of the college’s Brightest Star award, won this year by Kane Cooper.

Kane has just completed his level 3 BTEC diploma in Sport, having been determined to return to college to continue his studies after a life-changing medical episode and brain injury.

He said: “I’m a bit surprised!  Feel really appreciative but I’m so surprised because there are so many other people who could have won.

“It’s been really good at Worthing. The teachers have all been really supportive.

“I was doing sport to begin with, and then I had my brain injury. But the college was really supportive with me coming back.”

Kane’s mum, Kelly, added: “I’m over the moon. I can’t believe how far he’s come.

“It’s amazing to see. He’s done really well and we’re so proud of him.”

Helena Thomas, Principal of Worthing and Northbrook Colleges, presented the awards alongside Jenny Thompson and Shaun Mallin, Vice Principals of Worthing and Northbrook Colleges respectively. They were joined by Vicki Illingworth, Executive Principal and Deputy Chief Executive of the Chichester College Group, who presented the Brightest Star Award.

Helena said: “This was an absolutely inspiring night of celebration, which really showcased just how much our colleges are changing lives through learning.

“We’re so proud of our students and our staff. They put absolutely everything into all that they do, and that shone through during our awards evening.

“My congratulations to all our award winners – and to Kane, who is a very worthy winner of the Brightest Star award. He is an inspiration to us all and to see the challenges he has faced, and the determination he has shown, it really is quite emotional.”
