COURSE OVERVIEW
If English is not your first language and you need to develop your language skills, you can choose to study ESOL at Worthing College. Our ESOL courses will help you to prepare for further ESOL studies or other courses at Worthing College. They will also support you with your preparations for employment. You will be able to develop your reading, writing, and speaking & listening skills in preparation for the ESOL qualifications at the appropriate level. Lessons include group work and individual work, as well as class discussions. You will need to develop your reading, writing, and speaking & listening skills on the course. You will also be able to develop skills in working independently, in pairs and in groups.
We offer four ESOL courses, each course is a one-year course running from September to June:
- ESOL Entry Level 1
- ESOL Entry Level 2
- ESOL Entry Level 3
- ESOL Level 1 / 2 (this is one class, students are either Level 1 or 2 within the class)
Students on the ESOL Level 1 / 2 course also complete the following Gateway qualifications as a part of their studies:
- Level 1 Award in Living and Working in the UK
- Level 1 Award in Progression: Creative Writing & Writing with Accuracy
16-18-year-old ESOL students will also need to study Number and Measure or GCSE Maths as a part of their study programme if they have not achieved a Grade 4 in GCSE Maths before starting at the college. 19+ ESOL learners can request to study either of these numeracy qualifications.
FURTHER INFORMATION
No formal qualifications are required to take an ESOL course. Ideally you will have completed or be working towards ESOL Entry Level 1 or similar qualification before starting the course. Your level of English will be tested to make sure you are in the right ESOL group. You will need to be working towards Entry Level 1 to join the course. You will be assessed after you have applied, this assessment will determine what level of ESOL you are enrolled on. The level determined from these assessments is final.
Our ESOL courses will help you to:
- Gain a nationally recognised ESOL qualification and certificate
- Progress onto further ESOL courses and/or other courses in the College
- Develop your employability skills
- Develop your digital and maths skills
- Access extra support through our experienced teachers and pastoral support tutors
- Make friends through enrichment activities
- Get advice about education and training opportunities
You will take formal assessments at the end of each term (Christmas, Easter, Summer). You will study for a different award each term:
Entry Level 1, Entry Level 2 and Entry Level 3:
- Reading (Term 1)
- Speaking and Listening (Term 2)
- Writing (Term 3)
Level 1 and Level 2:
- Speaking and Listening (Term 1)
- Reading (Term 2)
- Writing (Term 3)
Each separate award is assessed by an exam at the end of the term. You will progress to the next award after successful completion of the one before. All awards are sat at the same level throughout the academic year.
Students 16-18 year olds will not have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exam fees. 19+ students may also not have to pay tuition fees, awarding body registration or exams fees, this is dependent on an individual’s status and ability to provide the evidence required to support their status. Please note, you may be entitled to The Learner Support Grant (Bursary) payment to help with costs such as travel to College, trips and equipment. To qualify you must be resident in the UK and meet the eligibility criteria which will include evidence of your financial circumstances, information for this grant can be requested at enrolment.
