Scope Performance for Health and Social Care Students

May 21, 2019

Worthing and District Scope is a charity who aim to support the needs of people with learning disability, especially cerebral palsy, and their families, by offering day centres, social clubs, housing and assisted living facilities and a community liaison service.

Worthing and District Scope Community Links Group is a group aiming to raise awareness of people with disabilities through social interaction between service users and different members of the community which has been running for over nine years.  As a part of this, our Year 12 Health and Social Care Foundation Diploma students enjoyed a short play by Julia Donaldson called "Zog and the Flying Doctors", a story about a dragon, a princess and a knight. The performance included signing songs with Makaton, which is a sign language used to help people to communicate.

Health and Social teacher, Anne Andrew invited Scope to support students studying a unit about working with People with Learning Difficulties. The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance, with one student Grace, saying "I loved how they all participated when you did the Makaton song 'This Is Me' and I found it very moving". Not only did students watch the performance, they got to take part too!  Joining in with the dancing and even learning some Makaton in order to sign along!

Students were also given the chance to meet Fletcher, a dog from the charity Canine Partners, a charity that trains dogs to aid people with Learning Difficulties with everyday tasks, including opening and closing doors, unloading the washing machine and fetching help in an emergency, all of which allow people with Learning Difficulties to live independently! For more information check out their website

The performance gave students a new insight into their current unit of Health and Social care, with one student saying "They helped us understand how we can help people with learning disabilities to integrate into the community".  We really appreciate the time Worthing Scope took to come and inspire our students
