Passionate perspectives at the general election hustings

The hustings event was held in the Exhibition Hall on Thursday 5th December from 7.00 - 8.30pm and attracted an audience including students, staff and local residents who were keen to hear from the local candidates standing in the election. Joining the debate were Sir Peter Bottomley (Conservative), Jo Paul (Green), Beccy Cooper (Labour) and Ashley Ridley (Liberal Democrat). The hustings was chaired by Jamie Crow, Head of News at More Radio. A broad range of subjects were covered in the 90 minutes available including local poverty, homelessness and the rise in the number of food banks in Worthing. Another strong theme of the debate was around climate change, sustainable travel and the development of both sustainable and affordable housing especially for young people. Education was also raised as an urgent issue in terms of funding for all schools and colleges as well as how to ensure better provision for children with special educational needs. The evening ended on a question around free speech in colleges and universities.
