Following up on our Catering Manager's Environmental Mission!

Go Green week might be once a year, but we’re always thinking about how to reduce our impression on the environment. Last year we spoke with our catering manager Ron Bell about what changes he’s made within his team to help lessen the colleges’ impact environmentally. This year we’ve had a follow up with Ron, to see what green strings the catering team have been adding to their environmentally friendly bow.

We are pleased that we are still recycling our cooking oil, just like last year.

“The cooking oil we use is made by Olleco who are dedicated to recovering the value of things that others might consider to be waste. One of their core beliefs is that all waste has a value and Olleco have the experience and know-how to identify what that is.

The cooking oil we use gets turned into Biodiesel at the U.K's largest purpose-built plant. The plant is powered by Anaerobic Digestion which provides enough power to operate and create Biodiesel. Olleco provides 100% resource recovery for the food industry through a virtuous cycle of integrated supply, collection and conversion solutions, delivered to the highest standards.”

And we are still using recyclable and sustainable coffee cups.

“Our 'Enjoy' coffee cups are manufactured by Huhtamaki who are one of the world's leading paper cup and lid producers. All of the paper cups we use on site are recyclable and are made with 100% PEFC certified paperboard. The PEFC logo is a globally trusted trademark and certifies that the products are from forests that are sustainably managed. Once collected after use our cups are recycled by having the paper fibres extracted and converted into high-quality pulp suitable for a variety uses from luxury papers right through to robust packaging materials. Find out more about the recycling process here.”

One of the small things Ron has introduced and continues to make a MASSIVE difference is the introduction of a new napkin dispenser… we know, but hear him out!

“Another way we’ve helped to reduce our environmental impact is the introduction of a modern dispenser which delivers napkins one at a time. This not only improves hygiene but reduces napkin consumption by at least 25%. Thus reducing the impact on the environment with regards to waste.”

We continue to use sustainable wooden cutlery in our café…

“Sustainable wooden cutlery has replaced all plastic cutlery within our cafes. This has helped reduce our plastic consumption and our plastic impact on the environment. The biggest advantage of using wooden cutlery is that it is 100% compostable. You can use disposable wooden cutlery as a compostable resource and help the environment.”

As for new introductions to our environmental line-up, Ron has replaced our Cleaner & Degreaser and Antibacterial soaps, with SURE cleaning products which are 100% plant-based, so have little impact on the planet. We will be replacing other cleaning supplies with products from the SURE line up over the next few months.

Finally, our supplier of sandwiches and lunch options, Simply Lunch, have recently made changes to how they package their platters, replacing plastic trays with cardboard. This is what they had to say.

“At Simply Lunch, we are committed to playing our part in this movement and next month we will be launching our new buffet platters in cardboard packaging which ensures that we have reduced the plastic in this packaging by 95%. The new material in this product is a 100% naturally sourced bioplastic alternative.”

Thanks, Ron, for your continued and committed work on making the Catering Department as green as can be! You can find out what else is going on as part of the colleges Go Green Week, and how we're working to reduce our impact of the world around us here.
