Saturday 10th March saw Harlequins Ladies smash the record for attendance at a Premiership rugby match with 4,542 in support.
Our current Sports Academy player Roberta (Bobbie) Haywood started and scored helping Harlequins to win 14-12 against Richmond RFC, which also secured Harlequins position in the top two for the season. Izzy (Isobel) Mayhew, another Academy player, who has already earned 6 caps this season was also involved in the action where she and England teammate Jessica Breach took over the Harlequins Instagram account for the morning of the match.
“It’s been a fantastic journey for both Bobbie, Izzy and all the other girls involved with Harlequins this year” said Worthing College Women’s Rugby Sporting Excellence Academy Manager Mark Rugman. “All the girls especially Bobbie and Izzy have flourished in the Academy, and have improved so much in the two years whilst they’ve been at the College. To play, be a part of, and even score in front of 4,500 people is an experience they will never forget. Something they will cherish for the rest of their life”.
Our Women’s Rugby Sporting Excellence Academy, is one of only 6 centres that play rugby at the highest level in the UK for 16-19 year old. The Women’s rugby Academy has a rich history of success both individually and as a team with successes such as alumni Amy Wilson-Hardy (a professional England player) winning the Nationals in 2014 and 6 girls playing Premiership rugby in the last 2 years.
