My Year 10 choices: how will they affect my opportunities at Worthing College?
Your school will help you to make your year 10 choices. You will be allowed to choose subjects which you follow at school throughout year 10 and year 11. Some people will be able to choose to study at a college as well as at school. You can find out more about college options for years 10 and 11 from your school. This part of our website is about what happens after year 11.
What happens after year 11?
By the end of year 11 you will normally have had the opportunity to gain important qualifications such as GCSEs and BTECs. Early in year 11 you will start thinking about choices for year 12 onwards. One of your options will be to apply to join Worthing College, which is the most popular destination for year 11 students in Worthing Schools. We will let you know how to apply in good time.
What choices will I have at Worthing College?
We have a carefully planned range of courses to give you as much choice as possible after you have completed year 11. We have one of the biggest choices in Sussex.
We often talk about the levels of courses. Most Worthing College courses are at level 3 and 2 (eg A Levels and BTECS and GCSEs); most year 10 and 11 courses are at levels 1 or 2 (eg GCSEs BTECs and OCRs).
To progress to level 3 courses at Worthing College you will need level 2 qualifications. In most cases this means achieving at least five grade Cs at GCSE or equivalent. For many courses this is the only entry requirement.
For some level 3 courses you will need English GCSE at grade C or above. To progress to level 3 in Maths you will need GCSE Maths (Higher Tier) at grade C or above; likewise for Modern Foreign Languages you will need corresponding GCSEs at grade B. For all level 3 Sciences you will need level 2 Science qualifications; for many you need grade C GCSE Maths as well. For most people GCSE Maths, English and Science are automatically part of their year 10 and 11 programmes.
We are happy to advise on the GCSE equivalence of other qualifications. Here, for example, are the BTEC equivalents, including changes from September 2010.

Level 2 BTEC achievements are often a strong indicator that progression to our Level 3 BTECs is recommended.
To progress to level 2 courses at Worthing College you will need level 1 qualifications. In most cases this means achieving at least two grade Ds at GCSE or equivalent.
We also offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). This is available at level 1 and Entry levels. We offer individual assessments to advise on the best level.
