A beautiful summer evening at the end of term saw AS music and dance students at Worthing College give a wonderful show full of variety, humour and talent. The evening started with Pims on the terrace and the presentation of awards from Northbrook College to college band ‘On The Verge’ for their performance at the recent SkoolFest, and to Eddie String who had compered that evening with wit and style.
The concert featured a range of musicians and dancers who all displayed great skill and verve starting with Abbie Edwards, winner of the Worthing College talent show at Christmas singing numbers by Beyoncé and Adele, right through to the top of the bill performance of On The Verge who played a selection of their own material.
German family in the audience
In terms of musicianship Ben Strusch’s performance of Chopin’s Fantaisie-Impromptu in C Minor was outstanding. This complex piece was played with tremendous ability and vigour, and the audience was stunned by the young German student’s virtuosity. The performance was made all the more memorable as Ben’s parents were over from Strausberg near Berlin for the concert.
A Dance duet from the graceful and dynamic Melissa Diprose and Elle Locke was followed by a lively a cappella medley of current hits sung by Abbie, Rebecca Buxton, Lisa Whiting and Aidan Dibble which provided a delightful counterpoint to the other musical offerings.
Highlight – Rock and Roll Nerd
Finally the audience gave a loud and very enthusiastic response to Mike Winter’s rendition of ‘Rock and Roll Nerd’ by Tim Minchin. With superb piano playing and hilarious lyrics about middle class teenage angst superbly delivered by bespectacled Mike (right) this number was the highlight of the show for many, especially the parents and adults looking back on their own teenage years with nostalgia.
All in all a great evening.
